Authorship and Contributorship Policy
Authorship and Contributorship Policy
The Journal of Health and Nutrition Research (JHNR) is committed to promoting transparency, accountability, fairness, and research integrity in the attribution of authorship and individual contributions to scholarly publications.
Purpose and Scope
This policy establishes the principles and requirements for determining authorship, acknowledging contributions, assigning responsibility, and managing authorship-related matters in manuscripts submitted to and published by the Journal of Health and Nutrition Research (JHNR).
The policy is informed by the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT), and relevant principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Effective Date: 9 October 2026
Mandatory Author Contributions Statement: December 2026 Issue Onward
Policy Update and Implementation Schedule
JHNR has not consistently included individual author contribution statements in articles published before the December 2026 issue.
Beginning with the December 2026 issue, all articles published in JHNR will be required to include an Author Contributions Statement identifying the specific contributions of each author, preferably using the CRediT taxonomy.
This requirement will be implemented prospectively. Articles published before the December 2026 issue are not automatically required to be amended solely to add individual contribution statements.
All authors remain responsible for complying with the applicable authorship, research integrity, and publication ethics standards of the journal, regardless of publication date.
1. Authorship Criteria
JHNR adopts the four authorship criteria recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). An individual should meet all four criteria to qualify for authorship.
Criterion 1. Substantial Contribution
Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work.
Criterion 2. Manuscript Preparation
Drafting the work or reviewing it critically for important intellectual content.
Criterion 3. Final Approval
Final approval of the version to be published.
Criterion 4. Accountability
Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.
2. Author Contributions and CRediT Taxonomy
JHNR encourages transparent reporting of individual contributions to scholarly articles. Beginning with articles published in the December 2026 issue, an Author Contributions Statement will be mandatory.
Authors are encouraged to identify their contributions using the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT), which includes the following 14 roles.
| CRediT Role | Description |
|---|---|
| Conceptualization | Development of research ideas and objectives. |
| Methodology | Development or design of methodology. |
| Software | Programming, software development, or implementation. |
| Validation | Verification of results and research outputs. |
| Formal Analysis | Application of formal analytical techniques. |
| Investigation | Conducting research and collecting evidence. |
| Resources | Provision of materials, facilities, or research resources. |
| Data Curation | Management, organization, and maintenance of research data. |
| Writing - Original Draft | Preparation of the initial manuscript draft. |
| Writing - Review & Editing | Critical review, revision, and editing of the manuscript. |
| Visualization | Preparation and presentation of visual research outputs. |
| Supervision | Research oversight and leadership. |
| Project Administration | Coordination and management of research activities. |
| Funding Acquisition | Acquisition of financial support for the research. |
Individual authors may be assigned more than one contribution role, and the same role may be shared by multiple authors.
The assignment of CRediT roles does not independently establish authorship. All listed authors must also meet the journal's authorship criteria.
3. Author Contributions Statement
For articles published from the December 2026 issue onward, the corresponding author must ensure that the manuscript includes an accurate Author Contributions Statement.
The statement should identify the specific contributions of each listed author. All authors must review and approve the contribution information before final publication.
Example: Author Contributions Statement
Author Contributions: A.B.: Conceptualization, Methodology, Investigation, Writing - Original Draft. C.D.: Data Curation, Formal Analysis, Visualization. E.F.: Supervision, Validation, Writing - Review & Editing.
All authors have read and approved the final version of the manuscript and agree to be accountable for their contributions to the work.
The example above is illustrative. Actual contribution statements must accurately reflect the work performed by each individual author.
4. Responsibilities of the Corresponding Author
The corresponding author acts as the primary contact between the authors and the journal during submission, peer review, publication, and relevant post-publication correspondence.
The corresponding author is responsible for coordinating the following:
- Ensuring that all listed authors meet the applicable authorship criteria.
- Confirming that all authors approve the submitted and final versions of the manuscript.
- Ensuring that the author list, affiliations, and contribution statements are accurate.
- Communicating editorial decisions and revision requests to all authors.
- Coordinating disclosures relating to ethical approval, funding, conflicts of interest, and other required declarations.
- Responding to reasonable journal inquiries concerning authorship and research integrity.
The corresponding author's coordinating role does not remove the individual responsibility of other co-authors for the integrity of the work.
5. Author Order and Authorship Changes
5.1 Author Order
The order of authors should be determined collectively by the authors based on their contributions and mutual agreement before manuscript submission.
JHNR does not determine author order on behalf of research teams.
5.2 Changes Before Publication
Requests to add, remove, or rearrange authors after submission must be communicated to the editorial office with a clear explanation.
Such requests should include written agreement from all authors, including individuals proposed for addition or removal, where applicable.
The editorial team may request supporting documentation before deciding whether to approve the requested change.
5.3 Changes After Publication
Changes to authorship after publication will be assessed individually in accordance with journal publication ethics policies and relevant COPE guidance. Where a change is warranted, the journal will determine the appropriate form of published correction.
6. Unacceptable Authorship Practices
JHNR does not support authorship practices that misrepresent individual contributions or undermine research integrity.
Gift or Honorary Authorship
Including an individual as an author solely because of their seniority, institutional position, reputation, or personal relationship, without meeting the authorship criteria.
Guest Authorship
Including an individual primarily to enhance the perceived credibility or publication prospects of a manuscript, without a qualifying intellectual contribution.
Ghost Authorship
Omitting an individual who qualifies for authorship or concealing substantial writing or research assistance that should be appropriately disclosed.
Cases of suspected inappropriate authorship may be investigated by the editorial team. The journal may request explanations, contribution records, or other relevant information.
7. Non-Author Contributions and Acknowledgments
Contributions that do not meet all four ICMJE authorship criteria should be recognized in the Acknowledgments section where appropriate.
Examples may include:
- Technical or laboratory assistance.
- Administrative or logistical support.
- General supervision without a qualifying authorship contribution.
- Language editing or professional writing assistance.
- Other assistance that does not independently meet the authorship criteria.
Authors should obtain permission from individuals who are named in the Acknowledgments section.
8. Authorship Disputes and Editorial Assessment
Disagreements concerning authorship eligibility, author order, contribution statements, or other authorship-related issues should initially be addressed by the authors and, where appropriate, their affiliated institutions.
When an authorship concern is brought to the attention of JHNR, the editorial office may request written explanations, relevant documentation, and confirmation from the parties involved.
The journal may pause editorial processing while a significant authorship concern is being assessed.
Where independent investigation is required, JHNR may refer the matter to an appropriate institution. Editorial decisions will be informed by the available evidence, journal policies, and relevant COPE guidance.
9. Artificial Intelligence and Authorship
Generative artificial intelligence systems and AI-assisted technologies must not be listed as authors or co-authors of manuscripts submitted to JHNR.
AI tools cannot assume responsibility for research integrity, approve the final manuscript, or fulfill the accountability requirements of human authorship.
Human authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, ethical compliance, and integrity of the submitted work.
Any use of AI-assisted technologies must comply with JHNR's applicable Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies Policy.
10. Editorial Responsibility and Policy Review
The JHNR editorial team is responsible for implementing this policy within the journal's editorial and publication processes.
The journal may request authorship declarations, contribution statements, written confirmations, or supporting documentation when necessary.
JHNR will review this policy periodically to maintain alignment with recognized international publication ethics recommendations and developments in scholarly publishing.
Subsequent policy revisions will be identified through the updated policy date published on this page.
